Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

As an independent bottler, Duncan Taylor purchases or holds casks of distilled spirit from various distilleries, manages maturation/finishing and carries out bottling and packaging at its Huntly facility; it is not presented as a primary producer of new-make spirit.

Distillation

Not applicable as a primary proprietary process: the company operates as an independent bottler, selecting and bottling spirits produced by third parties.

Ageing

Maturation in traditional casks with re-casking/finishing in smaller casks for some series (Octave/Quarter) and long ageing for the Rare Auld releases; practice of re-racking and bottling at cask strength for many editions.

Producer history Duncan Taylor

Founded as a cask broker in Glasgow in 1938, the company became custodian of a large stock of casks. In the 2000s it was acquired by Euan Shand, who relaunched it as an independent bottler and progressively moved the headquarters and bottling facility to Huntly (Aberdeenshire). Recent documentation indicates a change in ownership/management announced in April 2024.

Production philosophy

Selection and enhancement of rare and vintage casks sourced from various distilleries, with a focus on single cask releases, reissues of historic casks and maturation/finishing experiments (Octave/Quarter series). Prefers non chill-filtered bottles and the release of numbered, limited editions.

Territory

Scotland (operates internationally but with an operational base and bottling facility in Huntly, Aberdeenshire).

Awards and recognitions

Recognitions such as 'Independent Bottlers of the Year' awarded by Whisky Magazine in several editions (years indicated in the sources: 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2011).
