Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Batch production with pot stills: reportedly three wash stills and three spirit stills, relatively long fermentations and condensation via worm tubs that contribute to a fuller, richer spirit. Part of the production is destined for blends; official single malt releases appear sporadically.

Distillation

Pot stills with worm tub condensers; 3 wash stills and 3 spirit stills reported by sources.

Ageing

Aging in oak casks; noted releases commonly report hogshead casks and sherry cask finishing for some editions.

Producer history Glen Elgin

Glen Elgin was built in 1898 and is located in Fogwatt, near Elgin in Moray (Speyside). It was founded by William Simpson and James Carle. During the 20th century the distillery became part of larger groups and has been owned by Diageo since 1997. Historically it supplied spirit for important blends (including White Horse) and has had official releases such as the 12-year-old and some older bottles in special editions.

Production philosophy

Traditional production focused on consistency of the spirit: classic batch distillation in pot stills with condensation via worm tubs. The distillery concentrates on the quality of the new make and on supplying spirit for blends, while maintaining selected official single malt releases.

Territory

Fogwatt, near Elgin, Moray — Speyside region, Scotland (United Kingdom).
