Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Traditional single malt production: distillation of malted barley on site, with batch fermentation and distillation. The distillery is noted for its focus on the local context and for integrating the production site with the tourist offer.

Distillation

Traditional batch pot still distillation: wash still and spirit still; double distillation typical of Scotch single malt.

Ageing

Maturation in oak casks; official expressions are generally matured in ex-bourbon casks and some special editions are finished in fortified wine casks (e.g. Amontillado for the Distillers Edition).

Producer history Glenkinchie

Glenkinchie is located near the village of Pencaitland, east of Edinburgh. The site's origins are old and the locality is associated with the Rate brothers; the distillery has gone through various periods of operation and ownership and in the 20th century became part of the larger whisky groups that today form Diageo. In recent years the visitor offering has been renewed with an expanded visitor centre and investment projects aimed at the tourist experience.

Production philosophy

Production of single malt in the typical Lowlands style: light, floral and grain-driven spirits that reflect the surrounding agricultural landscape. Particular attention is paid to visitor accessibility and to environmental sustainability practices on site.

Territory

East Lothian, Lowlands (Scotland). The site is about 15–20 miles from Edinburgh and is connected to the agricultural area that supplies barley for production.

Awards and recognitions

Glenkinchie 12 was recognised as Best Lowland Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards 2013. The Distillers Edition series has received awards at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (e.g. multiple Gold/Trophy awards across editions) and other prizes for specific releases.
