Distillation and production

Production method

Traditional industrial process adapted to a farm environment: malting and milling of barley grown on site, controlled mashing and fermentation, distillation in batch copper pot stills (two pot stills) designed to maximise copper contact; filling and maturation in selected casks in warehouses converted from farm buildings.

Distillation

Distillation in two copper pot stills (batch), with slow runs aimed at maximising copper contact to obtain a clear, characterful new make.

Ageing

Maturation in selected casks, carried out on-site in the warehouses/bonded warehouses converted from the farm buildings; maturation influenced by local seasons.

Producer history Lochlea

Lochlea was born from the conversion of the agricultural buildings of Lochlea Farm into a distillery commissioned in 2018; the first spirit was produced in August 2018. Ownership maintains agricultural operations and the field-to-bottle (single-estate) concept, highlighting the local tradition connected to the land where the poet Robert Burns once worked. The first commercial release of the core range (Our Barley) was launched in the years following production start.

Production philosophy

Single-estate production: raw materials (barley) grown on the farm and full traceability from field to bottle; artisanal approach and focus on quality rather than production scale.

Territory

Lochlea Farm, Ayrshire (Lowlands), Scotland; a business closely tied to the agricultural territory and local history (Robert Burns).

Awards and recognitions

Global Single Estate of the Year (Icons of Whisky Awards 2023); International Trade Business of the Year (Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce Awards 2023); Best Independent Family-Owned Whisky Distillery in Scotland (2025).
