Distillation and production

Production method

Traditional single malt production: sourcing local barley, using water from local springs, fermentation and subsequent two-stage distillation (wash and spirit). The distillery employs multiple stills to shape the new-make character, followed by ageing in oak casks (including ex-bourbon).

Distillation

Two-stage distillation using wash stills and spirit stills.

Ageing

Maturation in American oak casks, hogsheads and barrels (including ex-bourbon casks) for variable periods depending on the expressions.

Producer history Longmorn

Longmorn was founded by John Duff together with Charles Shirres and George Thomson in 1893; production began at the end of 1894. During the 20th century the distillery passed through several owners and was incorporated into entities such as The Glenlivet Distillers Ltd; today it is part of the Chivas Brothers group, controlled by Pernod Ricard. The distillery developed alongside the railway line built to facilitate the transport of raw materials and bottles.

Production philosophy

Longmorn's identity is rooted in fidelity to the classic Speyside style: patience in maturation, careful blending of vintages and a pursuit of balance between sweetness and structure to achieve refined and consistent expressions.

Territory

Located in the Speyside (Moray) area, in the village/area of Longmorn, a short distance from Elgin in north-eastern Scotland. The surrounding territory, rich in barley farms and springs, has historically supported local production.

Awards and recognitions

The Longmorn 16 Year Old received silver medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (2008, 2009).
