Distillation and production

Production method

Production follows the classic stages of the Cognac supply chain: harvest of white grapes (mainly Ugni blanc), charentais distillation in charentais stills with double distillation, controlled selection and toasting of French oak barrels and long aging periods before final assemblage (blending).

Distillation

Double distillation in charentais stills (charentaise distillation) according to the traditional method of the region.

Ageing

Aging in French oak barrels in naturally humid cellars located above the Osme river (humidity around 75-80%), with selection of barrels by age of the eaux-de-vie and subsequent blending.

Producer history Maison Gautier

The maison traces its origins to the 18th century and presents itself as one of the oldest Cognac houses: officially founded in 1755 and established in Aigre since 1762. Over the centuries the Gautier family has developed collections of eaux-de-vie and preserved significant archives; the brand today is part of the Marie Brizard Wine & Spirits group. The maison is also known for historical items such as a lot of cognac dated 1762 that has appeared in international auction contexts.

Production philosophy

Maison Gautier states it combines historical heritage and multi-generational expertise with a contemporary approach: careful aging in humid cellars, attention to barrel selection and to the choice of crus to achieve aromatic harmony in blends.

Territory

Aigre, Charente department, Nouvelle-Aquitaine region (southwest France). Cellars are located above the Osme river and the maison uses eaux-de-vie from multiple crus of the Cognac region (including Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Fins Bois and Bons Bois).

Awards and recognitions

Medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition: Double Gold for Pinar Del Rio; Gold for Tradition Rare, 1755, VS and VSOP (reported by the maison in its news).
