Distillation and production

Production method

Selection of Muscat wines from the islands (notably Samos) and wine distillates sourced from various origins; separate aging of components in oak casks, subsequent blending ("marriage") and finishing with a bouquet of Mediterranean botanicals before further maturation and bottling.

Distillation

Use of wine distillates; for the Greek component the practice of distilling from sun-dried grapes is documented.

Ageing

Separate aging of Muscat wines and distillates in oak casks; subsequent assembly (blending) and further maturation of the blend in casks.

Producer history Metaxa

METAXA was created by Spyros Metaxa in 1888. Initially produced in Piraeus, the company moved its cellars to Kifissia (Athens) in 1968. Ownership passed from the founding family to international groups: sold to Grand Metropolitan in 1989 and later acquired by Rémy Cointreau in 2000. Over time the brand developed a range of numbered expressions (5, 7, 12 Stars and various premium releases) and strengthened its connection with the Muscat vineyards of Samos.

Production philosophy

To highlight the terroir of Samos and the craftsmanship of winemaking/distillation: selection of aromatic Muscat wines, separately aged wine distillates and the union of these components with Mediterranean botanicals to achieve a soft, aromatic and recognizable character.

Territory

Greece; Muscat vineyards on the island of Samos (supply of Muscat wines); operational cellars in the Kifissia area (Athens); international brand/industrial presence through the owning group.
