Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Fermentation of molasses (for traditional cuvées) and, for some agricole expressions, the use of fresh sugarcane juice; distillation mainly in multi-stage column stills with plates. The distillery has an energy recovery system through methanisation and cogeneration to valorize distillation residues.

Distillation

Multi-stage column still distillation with plates (column still) to extract alcohol and aromatic components; process described as compliant with the IGP Rhum de La Réunion.

Ageing

Ageing in tropical chais on the island, with blending and finishes in various types of casks; some cuvées receive finishes in casks that previously held other wines or spirits.

Producer history Rivière du Mât

Founded in the 19th century and still operating as one of the oldest rum production sites on La Réunion, Rivière du Mât is based in Saint-Benoît and offers a range from white and spiced rums to aged blends (VSOP, XO), rhum arrangés and single-cask editions. Since 2012 production has been part of the La Martiniquaise group portfolio, which has brought a relaunch, expanded cuvées and increased industrial and environmental investments.

Production philosophy

Combining tradition and innovation: promoting the local characteristics of Réunion rum while preserving historical heritage and adopting sustainable practices (valorization of vinasse, biogas production, cogeneration). Offering a broad range that spans cocktail-oriented references, tasting rums and prestige bottlings.

Territory

Island of La Réunion (Indian Ocean), production and ageing site in Saint-Benoît (site de Beaufonds) with local chais for tropical ageing.

Awards and recognitions

Numerous international medals and recognitions reported (examples: gold medals at the Rum & Cachaça Masters 2024 for some references, medals at the Concours Général Agricole and Spirits Selection in recent years; the distillery publishes updates on the medals won by its cuvées).
