Distillation and production

Production method

Malt produced and dried on site with floor malting; lightly peated malting for some expressions. The process is almost entirely in‑house: malting, fermentation, distillation, maturation and bottling take place at the same facility. Distillation varies by range (Springbank: partial triple distillation, Longrow: double, Hazelburn: triple).

Distillation

Partial triple distillation (2.5 times) for the Springbank expression; Longrow (double distillation); Hazelburn (triple distillation).

Ageing

Maturation in casks; the core range uses blends of ex-bourbon and sherry casks; some expressions (e.g. 15 years in the Oloroso series) are matured predominantly or entirely in sherry casks.

Producer history Springbank

The distillery was founded on the site of Archibald Mitchell's illicit still and was officially established in 1828. Remaining under the Mitchell family's control (J & A Mitchell & Co.) for generations, it experienced intermittent activity during the 20th century but regained an international reputation from the 1990s onwards. Over time it developed three distinct ranges (Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn) and has preserved many traditional on‑site processes; in 2023 the ownership was placed in a trust with a family member participating in governance.

Production philosophy

Artisanal production and respect for traditional techniques: Springbank emphasizes 'from malt to bottle' production on the same site, prioritizing quality control, historic practices and family continuity in management.
