Distillation and production

Production method

The process begins with milling of malted barley, followed by mashing using local spring water, fermentation in washbacks with added yeast, distillation in copper pot stills and maturation. The common practice is primary maturation in ex-bourbon barrels (American white oak) with subsequent finishing in a second cask chosen to complete the aromatic profile.

Distillation

Distillation in copper pot stills; reported configuration: wash stills and spirit stills (traditional pot still setup).

Ageing

Primary maturation in ex-bourbon barrels (American white oak) followed by a period of finishing in a selected second cask (sherry, red or white wine barrique, port/tawny casks, etc.).

Producer history Tamnavulin

The Tamnavulin distillery was built in the 1960s (opened in 1966) to meet demand for malts destined for blends. After a closure in 1995, the site was refurbished and reopened in the late 2000s. In recent years the brand has relaunched a range of official single malts (including Double Cask, Sherry Cask and several Cask Editions) and has expanded experiments with finishes in wine and port barrels.

Production philosophy

Combining tradition and modernity to produce a typically Speyside single malt: a sweet, soft and fruity profile. The house focuses on double maturation (primary maturation in ex-bourbon followed by finishing in a second type of cask) to create distinctive flavour pairings.

Territory

Speyside (Tomnavoulin, Glenlivet) on the banks of the River Livet, in the Grampian/Cairngorms region, Scotland.
