Distillation and production

Production method

Grain-to-glass production at the Tullamore distillery: triple distillation, blending of three spirit types (pot still, malt and grain) and maturation using a multi-cask approach (triple cask maturation). Some expressions feature finishes in specific casks (e.g. Demerara rum casks for the XO Rum Cask).

Distillation

Triple distillation; production and assembly (blending) of three whiskey types (pot still, malt and grain).

Ageing

Maturation in wooden casks with a 'triple cask' approach (aging and finishing in different casks depending on the expression); use of rum (Demerara) finishes for some variants.

Producer history Tullamore D.E.W.

The brand originates in the town of Tullamore (County Offaly) and takes its name from the initials of Daniel Edmund Williams. Distilling activity on the site dates back to 1829. The brand went through various ownerships and production phases; in 2010 it was acquired by William Grant & Sons, which later built a new distillery in Tullamore, bringing production back on site (first phase completed in 2014; a subsequent investment for a grain whiskey production facility was completed after 2014).

Production philosophy

Pursuit of balance and smoothness through the combination of three types of whiskey (pot still, malt and grain), maturation across multiple cask types and a 'grain to glass' approach to control the entire production process.

Territory

Tullamore, County Offaly, Ireland (production site and visitor centre at Clonminch, Tullamore).

Awards and recognitions

Various expressions of the brand have received recognitions (including awards at the World Whiskies Awards and the International Spirits Challenge for some references).
