Producer history William Sanderson & Son

The company traces its origins to the business started by William Sanderson in Leith (Edinburgh) in the early 1860s; historical sources indicate that by 1863 it was already active as a maker of cordials and whisky blends. In 1882 William Sanderson created the blend that would become the famous Vat 69 (the name derives from a selection made from about 100 casks, number 69 being the preferred choice). In the following years the company participated in the establishment of facilities to secure steady supplies (including initiatives linked to the North British Distillery) and acquired distilleries such as Glen Garioch. In the 20th century the company merged with other firms (including Booth’s) and was eventually absorbed into the group that is now Diageo; the Vat 69 brand is still marketed internationally.
