Penfolds' Koonunga Hill Chardonnay represents the essence of the modern Australian expression of this beloved grape variety. With its philosophy of balancing tradition and innovation, Penfolds has created a Chardonnay that enhances the freshness and vitality of the fruit, enriched by subtle but significant wood maturation. This wine embodies the pioneering spirit of Penfolds, a winery known for its ability to explore and define new horizons in the world of wine.

Coming from vineyards selected to guarantee high quality grapes, Koonunga Hill Chardonnay benefits from the ideal climatic conditions that characterize the Australian wine-growing regions, where the warm daytime sun and cool night breezes allow us to obtain perfectly ripe and aromatic grapes. The winemaking is careful to preserve the natural acidity and liveliness of the fruit, while the targeted use of wood adds complexity without overpowering the freshness of the wine.

Visually, the wine has a brilliant straw yellow color, with greenish reflections that highlight its freshness. On the nose, Koonunga Hill Chardonnay unfolds an inviting range of aromas, from notes of white pulp fruit, such as peach and melon, to nuances of citrus, completed by delicate accents of vanilla and hazelnut, evidence of the skilful use of barriques.

On the palate, the wine offers a balanced tasting experience, where the freshness of citrus fruits and the richness of white pulp fruit intertwine harmoniously with a subtle creaminess and vibrant acidity. The maturation in wood gives the wine a light toasted note and an elegant structure, which ends in a clean and refreshing finish.

Ideal as an aperitif, Penfolds Koonunga Hill Chardonnay pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, from seafood and creamy pasta dishes to chicken and fish dishes. Its versatility and the balance between fruit and complexity make it an excellent table companion, capable of satisfying both the occasional drinker and the enthusiast looking for a Chardonnay with character.

With its Koonunga Hill Chardonnay, Penfolds continues to demonstrate its commitment to producing quality wines, offering a distinctive and refreshingly approachable interpretation of one of the world's most prized grape varieties.

Winery history
Penfolds was founded in Magill when Christopher and Mary Penfold planted the first vines in 1844. Over the decades the winery grew from local production of fortified and table wines to an international presence, with key moments such as the arrival of Max Schubert and the experimentation that led to the creation of the famous Grange in the 1950s. Today Penfolds combines tradition and innovation, continuing to nurture historic vineyards and select fruit from many regions for its flagship wines.
Production philosophy
The company's approach combines technical rigor and creativity: Penfolds prioritizes the pursuit of the "house style" through site selection, cellar experimentation and a vision that brings together science and craftsmanship to produce age-worthy, distinctive wines.
Terroir and vineyards
Historic headquarters in Magill, with sourcing from many Australian wine regions including Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Eden Valley, Clare Valley, Wrattonbully and also cooler areas such as Tasmania. Penfolds also has international projects and fruit sources, for example Napa Valley in the United States.
