The Sauternes AOC "Carmes de Rieussec" by Château Rieussec is a sublime expression of the Sauternes territory, renowned for its sweet dessert wines among the most celebrated in the world. Part of the prestigious Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) family of wines, Château Rieussec stands as one of the region's most eminent producers, with a history that demonstrates a commitment to creating wines of exceptional quality and refinement.

The "Carmes de Rieussec" represents the Château's second wine, designed to offer a more immediately accessible but no less fascinating interpretation of the classic Sauternes. The selection for this wine comes from vineyards located on clay-limestone soils, which favor the development of Botrytis cinerea, or "noble mold", essential for producing Sauternes with its characteristic notes of honey, candied fruit and aromatic complexity.

The vinification of "Carmes de Rieussec" takes place with great care, following the winemaking traditions that have made Sauternes famous. After a manual harvest of the grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea, the wine is fermented in French oak barriques, where it also matures for a variable period depending on the vintage, acquiring greater complexity and structure.

Visually, the wine stands out for its intense golden color, which is a prelude to the gustatory riches that are about to be revealed. On the nose, "Carmes de Rieussec" exhibits an exuberant bouquet of aromas, with dominant notes of dehydrated apricot, honey, candied citrus fruits and floral touches, enriched by nuances of sweet spices and vanilla, witnesses of the elegant passage in wood.

In the mouth, the wine surprises with its extraordinary harmony between sweetness and freshness, with an impeccable balance that avoids any sensation of heaviness. The richness of flavors faithfully follows the olfactory profile, leading to a long and persistent finish, characterized by a delicious acidic streak that invites another sip.

Ideal as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to foie gras, blue cheeses or fruit-based desserts, the Sauternes AOC "Carmes de Rieussec" by Château Rieussec is an excellent choice for special moments, offering a tasting experience that enchants and surprises, confirming the mastery and winemaking tradition of one of the most famous regions for the production of sweet wines.

Winery history
The estate's modern origins date back to the 18th century, when the property belonged to the Carmelitani di Langon; it was classified as a Premier Grand Cru in the 1855 Bordeaux classification. Over the centuries ownership passed through various hands until it was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild in 1984. After the acquisition the estate invested in a new winery and intensified grape selection to favour quality over quantity. The 2001 vintage of Château Rieussec was also chosen as Wine Spectator's "Wine of the Year" in 2004.
Production philosophy
Strong emphasis on manual grape selection and aging in wood. The approach prioritizes care of each individual lot and precision in blending to express the Sauternes terroir, with a quality policy also reflected in the choice of extended aging in barriques.
Terroir and vineyards
Situated between Fargues and Sauternes, the vineyard overlooks the confluence of the Ciron and Garonne rivers; the soils are described as gravelly-sandy deposits with clay components and limestone outcrops. The property borders renowned areas nearby, such as Château d'Yquem.
