Distillation and production

Production method

The Glenlivet declares a multi-stage process that includes malting, milling, mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation. The single malt is made from 100% malted barley, local spring water and yeast; distillation takes place in copper pot stills.

Distillation

Distillation in copper pot stills; a declared multi-stage production process (malting, milling, mashing, fermentation, distillation, maturation).

Ageing

Maturation in oak casks with practices of selective finishing and ageing in various barrel types to achieve distinct aromatic profiles.

Producer history The Glenlivet

The Glenlivet originates in the Livet Valley, Speyside: George Smith obtained the first legal licence to distil in the parish of Glenlivet in 1824. During the 19th century the name was protected and consolidated (registration of the name and defence of the product's identity). In the 20th century the brand expanded internationally; today production and brand management are handled within Chivas Brothers, part of the spirits sector. In recent years The Glenlivet has launched experimental collections (Sample Room Collection) and expanded its lineup and finishing practices.

Production philosophy

Combine tradition and innovation: preserve George Smith's original 'smooth & fruity' house style while pursuing careful cask-finishing experiments and barrel selection to reveal new facets of the single malt.

Territory

Livet Valley, Speyside, Ballindalloch area, Moray, Scotland.
