Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Use of copper pot stills in batch mode and low pressure for pomace distillation; bain-marie/vacuum low-temperature systems are employed for aromatic grape spirits to preserve aromas. Some products undergo ageing in casks/barriques.

Distillation

Copper pot stills operating in batch mode at low pressure; bain-marie/vacuum low-temperature distillation for aromatic grape spirits.

Ageing

Maturation in wooden casks and barriques for the reserves; young grappas are briefly rested in inert containers (stainless steel) before bottling. Some reserves are aged for long periods (e.g. Baronne 20 years).

Producer history Magnoberta

Founded in 1918 as a workshop attached to a liquor and vermouth shop (founders Paolo Berta and Domenico Magno), the company passed to the Luparia family in 1937. In the 1960s the modern production phase began with copper pot stills operating in batch mode; the first single-varietal grappa was distilled in 1964. In 1994 the company moved to a more modern facility near Casale-Asti and in 2018 celebrated its centenary with a renovation of the headquarters and the opening of the Grapperia 918, an exhibition and tasting space.

Production philosophy

Combines family tradition and production techniques designed to respect the aromatic characteristics of the pomace: enhancement of local grape varieties (single-varietal), focus on raw material quality and maturation processes that bring out smoothness and organoleptic complexity.
