Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Pot still distillation in England with separate double distillation: one for the more 'earthy' botanicals and one for the citrus botanicals, then uniting the distillates and reducing to bottling strength using Icelandic spring water. Seasonal editions include a third distillation of specific botanicals; the 9 Moons expression is aged in French oak casks with a solera-like approach.

Distillation

Separate double distillation in pot stills (distinct distillation of 'earthy' botanicals and citrus botanicals), recombination of the distillates and reduction to bottling strength with Icelandic spring water; a third distillation is used for seasonal variants.

Ageing

For the 9 Moons expression: aging in French oak barrels with cycles tied to lunar phases and a solera-like method for seasonal blending of casks.

Producer history Martini Miller's

The project began in London (Notting Hill) in spring 1998, when Martin Miller and his partners wanted to create a modern, very balanced version of traditional gin. The recipe was developed around the idea of distilling two families of botanicals separately (the more earthy/juniper-forward ones and the citrus ones) and then recombining them, finally using Icelandic spring water to achieve softness and cleanness on the palate. Over time the brand expanded its offering with fuller expressions (Westbourne), seasonal gins and an aged expression (9 Moons).

Production philosophy

A search for balance between juniper and citrus, the purity of water as a distinctive element, and a modern reinterpretation of the traditional distillation method to produce smooth, versatile gins suited both to neat drinking and cocktails.

Territory

Distillation and brand origin: England (London). Spring water and final proofing/finishing: Iceland (spring near Borgarnes).

Awards and recognitions

The Original expression has received IWSC recognitions (e.g. Gold 2020 and Silver in subsequent editions) according to industry sources.
