Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Production of agricole rum from fresh sugar cane juice (local pressing), fermentation and distillation in traditional discontinuous pot stills (reported as hybrid copper stills by multiple sources); subsequent aging in casks and, in some cases, finishing in casks that held Madeira wine. Some releases are bottled at cask strength.

Distillation

Distillation in traditional discontinuous pot stills (also described as a Portuguese-inspired hybrid copper still), agricole-style production (single cane juice).

Ageing

Aging in casks with frequent use of casks that previously held Madeira wine for finishing or maturation; some expressions are bottled at cask strength or as brut de fût.

Producer history O' Reizinho

The production unit known as O' Reizinho originated as a family engenho established by Florentino Izildo Gouveia Ferreira in 1982; the activity was officially registered on the island of Madeira in 2013. The Ferreira family produced aguardente from cane for personal and local use for generations; the first commercial releases of aged rum under a new brand identity appeared a few years after registration, with small-batch releases and collaborations/independent bottlings.

Production philosophy

Artisanal, small-scale production with close attention to local raw materials: fresh sugar cane juice sourced from small island farmers. Priority is given to terroir expression (Madeira agricole rum), limited releases and a family-oriented approach to production and bottling.

Territory

Island of Madeira (Autonomous Region of Madeira), Portugal; Santa Cruz / Gaula area (family site and workshop).

Awards and recognitions

Gold medal at the Warsaw Spirits Competition (2025 edition), reported by local press.
