Explore the spirits, production style and story of Octomore.

Octomore is the series of super-peated single malts produced and marketed by Bruichladdich on the island of Islay. It is known for extreme levels of peat, experiments with barley provenance and cask management, and for typically being bottled close to cask strength.

Distillation and production

Production method

Single malt Scotch whisky conceived, distilled, matured and bottled on Islay. Some editions (.1 and .2) are distilled from 100% Scottish barley; the .3 releases are distilled from barley grown on Islay (single-estate). Octomore releases are often bottled close to cask strength, with no added colourants and generally not chill-filtered.

Distillation

Single malt distilled in pot stills at Bruichladdich; bottled close to cask strength; without added colourants and generally not chill-filtered.

Ageing

Maturation in various casks depending on the release: a mix of first-fill American oak (first-fill bourbon / ex-Tennessee), ex-European wine casks (e.g. Sauternes, Amarone or similar sweet wine casks), and in some cases Virgin Oak; cask choices are curated for each release.

Producer history Octomore

Octomore was launched in 2008 as Bruichladdich's third range of single malts. The name comes from Octomore Farm, an estate a short distance from the distillery; since then the series has been released annually, exploring peat levels, barley provenance and maturation approaches.

Production philosophy

The Octomore line reflects Bruichladdich's 'progressive Hebridean' approach: pushing the boundaries of single malt through transparency about grain origin, maturation experimentation and a focus on terroir (Islay). Emphasis is placed on spirit quality, barley traceability and bottling practices that preserve the character of the liquid.

Territory

Islay Island (Argyll and Bute), Scotland, United Kingdom. Octomore Farm is located a short distance from the Bruichladdich distillery in the Port Charlotte/Bruichladdich area.
