A winery owned by the Scammacca family, active on Mount Etna since 1860 and producing Etna DOC wines, IGT wines and traditional-method sparkling wines.
Murgo’s winery was founded in 1860, when Senator Luigi Gravina gave the Scammacca family about 30 hectares of vineyards on Mount Etna, in the area of today’s San Michele estate. Baron Emanuele Scammacca del Murgo later developed the modern farm; the first Murgo bottle was bottled in 1981.
Production philosophy
Production highlights the territory and native grape varieties, with hand harvesting and attention to sustainability and care for the vines. The winery states that selected indigenous yeasts are used in winemaking.
Terroir and vineyards
The heart of the winery’s production is the San Michele estate, on Etna’s eastern slopes at about 500 metres above sea level. The vineyards grow on volcanic soils; the company also owns estates in Sicily and Lazio.
