Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Achleiten is an Austrian white wine produced exclusively with grapes Veltliner grown in the Achleiten district, a terroir particularly suited to the production of important white wines characterized by a steep territory, and where the soil is composed of shale, gneiss and silicon.

The difficult cultivation conditions due to the location of the vineyards produce a small quantity of fruit, however particularly concentrated and intense. The grapes, harvested at the right degree of ripeness, are carefully selected during the harvest; after a brief maceration on the skins and subsequent pressing, they are placed to ferment in stainless steel tanks and aged in large wooden barrels for a few months.

With a slightly greenish yellow appearance, an elegant and at the same time complex wine is born, capable of conquering taste and smell with its mix of fabulous aromas ranging from sweet notes of honey to fragrant hints of spicy citrus fruits, perfectly blended with nuances of ripe stone fruit and hints of mountain herbs.

A white wine that lends itself well to accompanying imaginative courses based on cooked or raw fish, delicate white meats and platters of not too seasoned cheeses.

Winery history
The estate's origins are documented as far back as the Middle Ages. The historic complex and the vineyards passed over time to several noble families; after the transfer of parcels from the Starhemberg to local growers, the site developed into a growers' cooperative. In the 20th century the cooperative adopted various names and has operated as Domäne Wachau since the late 2000s; the organization brings together hundreds of member-growers who cultivate the steep terraces of the Wachau.
Production philosophy
Craftsmanship, respect for the terroir and precision in the vineyard and cellar: Domäne Wachau emphasizes the grapes' inherent quality, agricultural practices focused on biodiversity and soil health, and low-intervention winemaking. The estate has undertaken sustainability and certification initiatives and promotes ongoing training for its growers.
Terroir and vineyards
Wachau Valley, on the steep terraces along the Danube around Dürnstein. The grapes come from numerous renowned Rieden/contrade of the Wachau, including Achleiten, Loibenberg, Kellerberg, Axpoint, Tausendeimerberg and other exposures typical of the valley's gneiss cliffs.
