Spaten, better known by its full name Spaten-Bräu, is a former brewery in Munich, Germany, founded in 1397. Gabriel Sedlmayr's Spaten Brewery and Franziskaner Brewery merged in 1922, resulting in the new Spaten-Franziskaner company. Part of the famous Spaten-Lowenbrau-Gruppe group, belonging to the Belgian multinational InBev.
Spaten is one of the many German beers to be produced according to the Reinheitsgebot purity law. Today's lager brewing methods were pioneered by Gabriel Sedlmayr who perfected dark lagers at the Spaten brewery in the 1930s.
The name in German means "spade" and the logo on the label represents a malt shovel.
In the mouth the taste is delicately spiced, very fresh and pleasant, and equally full and delicate, with a slightly spicy aroma. It is presented in the glass with a golden yellow color and a dense and abundant foam.
The combination is excellent with appetizing aperitifs based on cheese and cured meats; as well as being perfect in combination with pizza and hamburgers.
