Montelobos Espadín Mezcal is a premium distillate that captures the pure essence of wild Espadín agave plants, grown in the mountainous regions of Oaxaca state, Mexico. This mezcal is the result of a meticulous artisanal process that respects the ancient traditions of mezcal distillation.
Production begins with the careful selection of agave plants, which are slowly cooked in underground stone-lined pits. This traditional method imparts a characteristic smoky flavor to Montelobos, setting it apart from other distillates. After cooking, the agave is ground and the extracted juice is naturally fermented with indigenous yeasts.
Distillation occurs in small copper stills, a process that preserves the subtle aromatic nuances of the agave. Montelobos Espadín Mezcal has a clear, crystalline appearance and offers intense aromas of cooked agave, moist earth, and slight smoky notes on the nose. On the palate, it is surprisingly smooth with a beautiful complexity of flavors ranging from smoky and earthy to touches of black pepper and aromatic plants.
