Distillation and production

Production method

The line includes a pure distillate obtained from a blend of medicinal herbs, gins produced in the London Dry style and an 'Alpino' gin with specific filtration steps, maceration of botanicals for the bitters/americants and long wood ageing for the Riserva Speciale. Some references include the addition of honey in the dedicated 'Al Miele' version.

Distillation

Herb distillation for the Alpestre distillate; London Dry for the gin; maceration of botanicals for bitters and some preparations; filtration and specific processes described in product sheets.

Ageing

Ageing in oak barrels (Slavonian oak cited for the Riserva Speciale); some references indicate very long ageing periods (for example over 20–25 years for the millesimé Riserva Speciale). A minimum ageing of 4 years is also indicated for certain expressions.

Producer history Alpestre

The recipe dates back to 1857, when a Marist brother (Brother Emanuele) developed a distillate from numerous medicinal plants. Production became established in Carmagnola (Turin) and during the 20th century the product was renamed Alpestre; the brand was revived and relaunched by the Onesti Group from 2013. In recent years the brand expanded its portfolio with new expressions (including Hermite and the millesimé Riserva Speciale).

Production philosophy

To recover and enhance a historic formulation of medicinal herbs, respecting the pharmacological tradition of the Marist Brothers while combining it with a contemporary approach to quality and ageing. The brand identity revolves around a selection of refined botanicals (over 30) and products that evoke territory and craftsmanship.

Territory

Origins and tradition rooted in Carmagnola (Province of Turin, Piedmont); the brand is today managed by OnestiGroup with operational/administrative contacts also in Fiorenzuola d'Arda (PC).
