Distillation and production

Production method

Grand Marnier is produced by blending selected eaux‑de‑vie of Cognac with distilled essences of bitter oranges (bigarade). The orange essences are distilled separately and then mixed with aged cognacs; ageing, blending and finishing operations take place at the Château de Bourg‑Charente.

Distillation

Separate distillation of essences obtained from bitter orange peels; assembly and blending with eaux‑de‑vie of Cognac (traditional blending method of the house).

Ageing

The eaux‑de‑vie of Cognac are aged in oak barrels; subsequent blending and finishing take place at the Château de Bourg‑Charente.

Producer history Grand Marnier

The origins trace back to the distillery founded by the Lapostolle family in Neauphle‑le‑Château (1827). In 1880 Louis‑Alexandre Marnier‑Lapostolle combined cognac with the essence of bitter oranges (bigarade), creating the liqueur that would be named Grand Marnier. Throughout the 20th century the house developed special cuvées and expanded its international presence. Since 2016 the brand and related activities have been part of Gruppo Campari.

Production philosophy

To unite the heritage of great French spiritueux (the eaux‑de‑vie of Cognac) with the exoticism and elegance of bitter orange essence. The house emphasizes the tradition of blending and the savoir‑faire of cellar masters, preserving the historic recipe while offering premium expressions through selected cuvées.

Territory

French brand born in Île‑de‑France (origin in Neauphle‑le‑Château); production and ageing of the eaux‑de‑vie carried out in the Cognac region (Château de Bourg‑Charente, department of Charente, Nouvelle‑Aquitaine). Current ownership: Gruppo Campari (acquisition completed in 2016).
