Distillation and production

Production method

Both short fermentations (for lighter marks) and long/open-vat fermentations (for heavier marks) using molasses; for the heavier marks dunder, muck and sometimes cane vinegar are employed. Distillation is carried out mainly with double-retort pot stills.

Double-retort pot still

Ageing

Barrel ageing with an extensive 'barrelling' practice at high percentages (NRJ distillates are traditionally barreled around 70% ABV); many single-cask releases show prolonged tropical maturation.

Producer history Long Pond

Long Pond originated as an estate and rum production facility in Trelawny Parish (Jamaica) with earliest attestations in the 18th century; many sources place its origin around 1753. During the 20th century ownership passed through several parties (including Seagram) until becoming part of National Rums of Jamaica (NRJ). For most of its history Long Pond operated primarily as a bulk rum supplier to blenders and brands. The distillery experienced temporary closures (including an environmental shutdown in 2012), was hit by a significant fire in July 2018 and resumed operations with a documented reopening ceremony in June 2022. Since 2021 NRJ has also begun marketing official expressions under the Long Pond name.

Production philosophy

To celebrate the traditional Jamaican pot still style and preserve the characteristic 'funky' profile typical of pot still mashes, maintaining practices that evoke the site's production heritage during the brand relaunch.
