This 1966 Armagnac from Rounagle offers a mature, restrained profile, the result of decades of evolution in cask. On the nose it opens with notes of plum and dried figs, followed by a trace of sweet tobacco and tentative hints of vanilla and oak; the picture is elegant, never aggressive, with a touch of sweet spices that accentuates its character. On the palate it is enveloping, soft without being flat: the warmth is present but well integrated, the tannic texture is smooth and the persistence leaves fruity echoes and a slightly spicy, dry finish.

Presented in a wooden case, it is conceived as a bottle to keep or give as a gift. It is best appreciated in small sips, in a tulip glass at room temperature or slightly warmed; it pairs well with dark chocolate, aged cheeses or a good cigar for those who enjoy traditional pairings. A bottle to reserve for unhurried moments, when you seek the pleasure of subtlety and depth.
