Yarra Yering's Dry Red No 1 is an emblematic wine of the Yarra Valley, one of Australia's major wine regions, known for producing elegant, high-quality wines. This wine is a tribute to the Bordeaux tradition, being a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with the addition of varieties such as Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot, which contribute to creating a complex and harmonious profile.

Yarra Yering, founded by the visionary Dr. Bailey Carrodus in 1969, has set a high standard of quality from the outset, producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Yarra Valley. Dry Red No 1 has become one of the symbols of the winery, representing the fusion between innovative winemaking methods and respect for classic traditions.

The vinification of Dry Red No 1 is carefully managed to enhance the characteristics of each variety included in the blend. Fermentation takes place in open tanks, with a thoughtful use of new wood for aging, in order not to overwhelm the purity of the fruit. This process gives the wine an impeccable balance between aromatic intensity and tannic structure.

Visually, the wine presents itself with an intense and deep red color. On the nose, a rich bouquet of aromas emerges, with notes of ripe black fruits, such as cassis and plums, together with nuances of aromatic herbs, chocolate and a light touch of cedar, deriving from the aging in wood. The whole is complex and evocative, inviting an in-depth tasting.

In the mouth, Dry Red No 1 reveals an extraordinary concentration of flavours, balanced by a lively freshness and finely crafted tannins, which give the wine a silky texture and long persistence. The aromatic complexity is found on the palate, with a harmonious integration between fruit, spices and woody notes, culminating in an elegant and persistent finish.

This wine is suitable for long aging, with the potential to develop further nuances of flavor and complexity over time. It is ideal in combination with rich and tasty dishes, such as grilled red meats, game dishes and mature cheeses, where it can fully express its richness and depth.

Yarra Yering's Dry Red No 1 is more than a wine; is a statement of intent, reflecting the winery's commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality and character, whilst celebrating the diversity and viticultural excellence of the Yarra Valley.

Winery history
Yarra Yering was planted in the late 1960s by Dr. Bailey Carrodus; the site was chosen for its well‑drained soils and for its location sheltered from late frosts. The first commercial vintage dates back to 1973. After Carrodus's passing in 2008, the property was acquired by passionate enthusiasts who have preserved the original philosophy and continued to build the brand's reputation.
Production philosophy
Focus on fruit quality and small-batch production — a philosophy also expressed by the motto 'grown not made'. The approach favors naturally low yields, careful attention to vineyard sites and winemaking aimed at elegance, structure and longevity in the bottle.
Terroir and vineyards
Located in Gruyere in the Yarra Valley, the estate sits on a north-facing slope of the Warramate Hills; the soils are mixed with bands of gravel that promote drainage and lend character to the wines. The climate is characterised by warm days and cool nights typical of the Yarra Valley.
Awards and recognitions
Among the accolades: Sarah Crowe was named James Halliday Winemaker of the Year and Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year; the winery has received significant recognitions, including James Halliday Winery of the Year and Wine of the Year.
