Founded in 1692, one of South Africa’s oldest estates. Commitment to conservation: WWF Conservation Champion and biodiversity projects launched in the 2000s. Produced using vegan practices for many wines. The portfolio includes Estate Range, Short Story Collection, and Cap Classique. The estate covers approximately 278 hectares, with about 100 hectares under vine.
Winery history
The property has documented origins in 1692, when Willem Barend Lubbe began cultivating the land then known as De Wolwedans. In the following centuries the estate passed through several families and expanded its wine production; the cellar and the manor house were completed in the early 19th century. Beginning in the 2000s the estate launched a biodiversity conservation program and, after various commercial partnerships, the property was acquired by the Grands Chais de France group in 2022.
Production philosophy
Production focused on respect for the land: viticultural practices that promote biodiversity, rational water use, natural pest control and composting of winery residues. Winemaking follows vegan guidelines for many wines, and the company aims to combine historical tradition with environmental responsibility.
Terroir and vineyards
Located between the Bottelary Hills and the Papegaaiberg near Stellenbosch, it benefits from the cooling influence of False Bay sea breezes. Varied soils and multiple distinct terroirs favour different grape varieties.
