Le uve utilizzate per produrre questo vino provengono da sette vigneti di età compresa tra i 21 ed i 28 anni. Quattro di essi si trovano in una zona caratterizzata da terreni ricchi di scisto e di rocce sedimentarie dette shale; due vigneti sono invece situati su suoli granitici decomposti di Paardberg. Infine, un appezzamento è ubicato su terreni ricchi di ferro.

Dopo la raccolta, i grappoli interi vengono trasferiti in vasche in acciaio inox, in cui inizia la fermentazione mediante lieviti indigeni. Le temperature non superano mai i 28°C, mentre la macerazione varia dalle 3 alle 7 settimane. Il vino completa la fermentazione malolattica in fusti di rovere francese, dove affina per quattordici mesi.

Nel calice si riversa con un colore rosso rubino intenso, all'olfatto vanta un esuberante e ricco aroma speziato, agrumato e floreale con prevalenza di sentori di frutta a bacca nera, gigli e violette. Sin dal primo sorso appare un vino elegante e sobrio, dotato di una buona struttura e di una consistenza setosa, ed equilibrato da una fresca acidità naturale. Il lungo e piacevolissimo finale è caratterizzato da morbidi tannini.

Un vino eccellente da servire in tavola in abbinamento a secondi piatti di carne rossa, arrosti, cacciagione, selvaggina e formaggi ben stagionati; oltre ad essere anche un buon calice da meditazione da sorseggiare in solitaria per godere appieno delle proprietà organolettiche.

Winery history
The estate grew out of the work of Chris and Andrea Mullineux: the Mullineux project is focused on high-quality production in the Swartland, while in 2013 the Mullineux family joined Analjit Singh to form Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines and establish the Leeu Passant winery at Leeu Estates in Franschhoek. The house has grown to become one of South Africa’s benchmarks for terroir-driven wines and for careful vineyard and cellar work.
Production philosophy
The approach focuses on expressing the terroir through sustainable farming and measured winemaking: wines that aim to reflect the soils and local clones, with natural fermentations and minimal use of additives and sulfites.
Terroir and vineyards
Production is based in two areas of the Western Cape: Roundstone Farm in the Riebeek Kasteel district, characterised by soils of shale, granite and iron-rich deposits; and Leeu Passant at Leeu Estates, Franschhoek, which produces multi-regional wines drawing on vineyards from different areas of the Cape.

International recognition, including repeated mentions in Platter’s South African Wine Guide and inclusion in Wine & Spirits' Top 100 Wineries in recent years; individual international awards for the producers.
