"Le Difese" IGT by Tenuta San Guido is a fascinating expression of the winemaking art of Tuscany, which combines elegance and structure in a harmonious way. This wine, produced by one of the most prestigious and historically significant wineries in Italy, is designed to offer a high-level tasting experience, accessible from the first years of the bottle's life. "Le Difese" is positioned as a complement to the range of Tenuta San Guido wines, offering a gateway to the style and philosophy of the winery, world famous for Sassicaia.

The composition of "Le Difese" sees a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives the wine its backbone of structure and depth, and Sangiovese, which brings liveliness, freshness and an authentic Tuscan touch. This combination creates a wine of great character and pleasantness, which reflects Tenuta San Guido's mastery in creating balanced blends rich in personality.

Visually, "Le Difese" has an intense ruby red color, which invites tasting. On the nose, aromas of ripe red fruits, sweet spices and a subtle herbaceous note open up, elements that blend perfectly with light nuances of oak, the result of the careful selection of barriques for refinement. This phase of maturation in wood is managed with skill so as not to overwhelm the freshness and fruitiness of the wine, but to add complexity and softness to the palate.

In the mouth, "Le Difese" shows an impeccable balance between the robustness of Cabernet Sauvignon and the refreshing acidity of Sangiovese. The tannins are fine and well integrated, supported by a good structure that promises a decent aging capacity. The finish is long and persistent, with an aftertaste that refers to the fruity and spicy notes perceived on the nose.

"Le Difese" is extremely versatile at the table, capable of accompanying a wide variety of dishes. It pairs well with red meat, both in elaborate and grilled preparations, game-based dishes, mature cheeses and Mediterranean cuisine in general. Its accessibility also makes it suitable as an aperitif wine, capable of stimulating the palate and inviting conviviality.

Ultimately, Tenuta San Guido's "Le Difese" IGT offers a taste of Tuscan wine excellence, demonstrating that even wines designed to be enjoyed young can reflect the depth, complexity and elegance that are the trademark of a of the most respected wineries in Italy.

Tenuta San Guido – Winery in Toscana

Discover the story and wines of Tenuta San Guido.

A winery in the Tuscan Maremma (Bolgheri) known for the celebrated Sassicaia, a Bordeaux-style Super‑Tuscan.
Region: Toscana
Country: Italia
Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Sangiovese
Producer of Sassicaia, the emblematic label of the "Super Tuscan" movement. Estate covering approximately 2,500 hectares in Maremma di Bolgheri. Two second wines are already on the market: Guidalberto and Le Difese. Diversified agricultural production: vineyards, olive groves, and initiatives related to wildlife and land conservation. Collaboration for the "Grappa di Sassicaia" distilled by Poli, using pomace from Tenuta San Guido.
Winery history
The estate is tied to the Incisa della Rocchetta family: Mario Incisa began experimenting with French varieties in Bolgheri and the private production of Sassicaia became commercial with the 1968 harvest. Over time Nicolò Incisa and his collaboration with winemaker Giacomo Tachis helped consolidate its reputation; subsequently the estate expanded its range with Guidalberto and Le Difese. Sassicaia obtained a reserved denomination, which reinforced the label’s distinctiveness.
Production philosophy
The estate's philosophy emphasizes respect for the ecosystem, the balance between people and nature, and an agricultural approach attentive to quality; the estate states agronomic practices aimed at soil care and sustainable management of its crops.
Terroir and vineyards
The estate extends into the Tuscan Maremma, in the Bolgheri area, on predominantly gravelly and stony soils reminiscent of the Graves formations in Bordeaux. The microclimate benefits from the maritime influence and the shelter of the hills behind it, factors that contribute to its suitability for Bordeaux grape varieties.
Awards and recognitions
International recognition for Sassicaia includes top scores from international critics and prominent placements in landmark tastings, such as the Decanter tasting in which Sassicaia was acknowledged. In addition, the 2015 vintage was named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator.
