Winery history
Launched in 2021, the project marks the Frescobaldi family’s return to Montepulciano. The name Calimaia refers to the Calimala, the ancient Florentine guild of textile merchants with which the Frescobaldi family was associated.
Production philosophy
The estate’s production philosophy focuses on expressing the terroir of Montepulciano and its soil and climate conditions, with particular attention to Sangiovese, locally known as Prugnolo Gentile.
Terroir and vineyards
The estate covers approximately 70 hectares in Cervognano, between the Val di Chiana and Val d’Orcia. The vineyards lie at around 300 metres above sea level on the Monteliscione ridge, on Pliocene soils that are poor in organic matter and rich in clay.
