Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Typical single malt production: batch distillation in pot stills (wash and spirit stills), followed by maturation in casks. Many core expressions are produced using double cask maturation with both ex-bourbon and sherry casks; A'Bunadh is matured exclusively in Oloroso butts and bottled at cask strength.

Distillation

Distillation in pot stills (batch): pairs of wash stills and spirit stills as the traditional setup for single malt.

Ageing

Maturation in casks: many expressions combine aging in ex-bourbon casks (American white oak) and in sherry casks (Oloroso) — double cask maturation practices; A'Bunadh is matured exclusively in Oloroso butts and bottled at cask strength.

Producer history Aberlour

The Aberlour distillery was founded by James Fleming in the late 19th century (operations on site began in 1879 with first recorded productions around 1880). Ownership changed several times in the following decades; today the brand is managed by Chivas Brothers, part of the Pernod Ricard group. Throughout its history Aberlour has developed expressions matured in bourbon and sherry casks, and has released special editions and distillery bottlings.

Production philosophy

A craft-focused approach to the single malt: attention to local raw materials, cask selection and targeted maturation to achieve balance and aromatic depth. The historical reference to the founder (motto «Let the deed show») is used as a guide to production practice.

Territory

Aberlour, in the Speyside region (Strathspey), Scotland. The site is located at the confluence of the Lour Burn and the River Spey.

Awards and recognitions

Spirit of Speyside Whisky Awards 2024 – Overall Winner (mentioned on the official site for A'Bunadh).
