Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Production based on malted barley (part of the malt is produced on internal floor maltings), use of peated malt for a smoky character, distillation in traditional pot stills (wash and spirit stills) and maturation in selected casks such as ex-bourbon and sherry; cask management and warehouse practices are key components of the process.

Distillation

Traditional distillation in copper pot stills: two wash stills and two spirit stills according to available information.

Ageing

Aging in selected casks (commonly ex-bourbon and sherry casks; occasionally other types like claret for special editions) with maturation in on‑island warehouses that contribute to the final profile.

Producer history Bowmore

Bowmore is recorded as operating since 1779 and is located in the village of the same name on the shore of Loch Indaal, on Islay. Over the centuries production and ownership have evolved and today the distillery is part of the international Beam Suntory group (via Morrison Bowmore). It is often cited as the oldest active distillery on the island and has a long tradition of producing single malts recognised internationally.

Production philosophy

Bowmore aims to create multi-layered, balanced single malts that reflect Islay's maritime environment and careful cask management; the house values tradition (e.g. floor-malted barley) and strict maturation control to develop complexity and harmony in the whisky.

Territory

Islay island, Loch Indaal, Argyll and Bute, Scotland (United Kingdom).

Awards and recognitions

International recognition, including awards cited from the International Wine & Spirit Competition and mentions such as the Queen's Award for Export in past years (as reported in public profiles of the distillery).
