Distillation and production

Production method

Traditional single malt production: use of malted barley, fermentation and distillation with discontinuous copper pot stills. The site includes maturation warehouses (dunnage and racked); until 1968 the distillery carried out floor malting and cultivated part of its own barley, a practice later discontinued in favour of external sourcing.

Distillation

Traditional distillation in copper pot stills.

Ageing

Maturation in wooden casks (oak); the official range includes age-stated expressions (for example 12, 15, 18, 21 years) and sometimes vintage-dated bottles.

Producer history Knockando

The Knockando distillery was built at the end of the 19th century and attributed to John Tytler Thomson; the commonly reported founding year is 1898. In the early decades of the 20th century ownership passed to commercial groups that operated the site as a malt for blends; over the course of the century Knockando became part of the corporate chains that later merged into the group now known as Diageo. Historically the distillery used malts produced on site and, until 1968, operated floor maltings; in more recent times production has focused on extracting a consistent spirit for use both in the official single malt and as a component in blends.

Production philosophy

Knockando's declared style prioritises the lightness, balance and elegance typical of Speyside. The house has maintained transparent practices by labelling some releases with age and, occasionally, vintage; production is often oriented towards consistency of the aromatic profile rather than the pursuit of extreme characterisation.
