Distillation and production

Production method

For amaro products a secret blend of botanicals is macerated and infused; some traditional liqueurs undergo long macerations (e.g. rabarbaro, nocino). For certain categories of the group's spirits (brandy) both continuous and batch distillation processes are used, followed by blending and aging.

Distillation

Maceration and infusion of botanicals for amari and liqueurs; continuous and batch distillation for some brandies; subsequent blending for aged products.

Ageing

For brandies, aging in barrels and historic cellars, with blending and multi-year refinements (e.g. blending for at least three years indicated for some group brandies).

Producer history Montenegro

The business was founded in Bologna in 1885 when Stanislao Cobianchi formulated the Elisir Lungavita and established the 'Cobianchi Stanislao Distilleria a vapore'. The elixir, dedicated in 1896 to Princess Elena of Montenegro, became Amaro Montenegro. Over the 20th century the brand grew in recognition; subsequently the company expanded through acquisitions and integrations of historic brands (including Buton, Vecchia Romagna, Select, Bergia) and evolved into the current Gruppo Montenegro, with legal headquarters and production facilities in the province of Bologna and international commercial and distribution activities.

Production philosophy

To enhance Italian liqueur tradition through historic recipes and established formulas, focusing on quality, product identity and corporate responsibility/sustainability; at the same time the group operates as a distribution player for international brands.

Territory

Italy (origin in Bologna); headquarters and production sites in the province of Bologna (Zola Predosa / San Lazzaro). Commercial and distribution activities in international markets.
