The Merlot DOC from Ronco del Gelso winery is a distinctive example of this noble grape variety, cultivated with dedication in the fertile lands of Friuli Venezia Giulia. This red wine is known for its elegant structure and aromatic richness, making it an ideal companion for a refined dinner or a significant social event.

Visually, the Merlot from Ronco del Gelso boasts an intense ruby red color, which hints at the complexity and depth that are later revealed to the nose and palate. The bouquet unfolds as a complex array of ripe red fruits, with notable accents of plum and blackberry, enriched by a hint of spices and a subtle streak of tobacco and chocolate, due to aging in wooden barriques.

On the palate, the Merlot DOC from Ronco del Gelso shows a well-balanced structure, with soft yet present tannins that harmoniously blend with balanced acidity. The rich flavor of ripe fruit and slight spiciness come together to create a long and pleasantly persistent finish.

This wine pairs beautifully with dishes of red meat, game, and aged cheeses, but can also pleasantly surprise with slightly more daring dishes, such as a porcini mushroom risotto. The Merlot DOC from Ronco del Gelso is recommended to be served at a temperature of 18°C to enhance all its nuances.

With an aging potential that allows it to evolve and refine over the years, this Merlot is an excellent choice for enthusiasts looking to explore the typicality and elegance of the Friulian terroir through one of its most emblematic interpreters.

Wine estate based in Cormons (GO), Friuli-Venezia Giulia, best known for its local white wines such as the Pinot Grigio "Sot Lis Rivis" and for controlled production from grape to bottling.

Country: Italia
Founded: 1988
Grapes: Pinot Grigio, Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Malvasia Istriana, Riesling, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer
Address: Via Isonzo 117, 34071 Cormons Founded: 1988 Declared production: approximately 150,000 bottles per year Vineyards in the Isonzo plain, on lean, stony soils. Recently built winery with full control over all production stages.
Winery history
Family-run winery: the Badin family cites 1988 as the year they first bottled under the Ronco del Gelso name. The estate shifted from livestock farming to wine production, growing from a few thousand initial bottles to a production, stated on their current website, of approximately 150,000 bottles annually.
Production philosophy
The company emphasizes full control of the production process. In the vineyard, agronomic choices are geared toward quality: trellised training using single Guyot, high planting density, soil management with cover crops and yield limitation to achieve wines that express the terroir.
Terroir and vineyards
The vineyards are located in the narrow strip of plain formed by the tributaries of the Isonzo, between the Isonzo plain and the Collio. The soils are described as lean, stony and dry, conditions the estate considers favorable for quality viticulture.
Awards and recognitions
Numerous accolades and high scores, particularly for the Pinot Grigio "Sot Lis Rivis".
