Distillation and production

Distillation and production

Production method

Traditional single malt production: use of malted barley and local spring water, fermentation and distillation in pot stills following traditional Scottish techniques. The distillery primarily produces unpeated malt, using peated barley only for specific peated editions (e.g. Old Ballantruan).

Distillation

Traditional distillation in batch pot stills typical of single malt production; predominantly produced with unpeated malt and occasional use of peated barley for peated expressions.

Ageing

Maturation in oak casks with use of ex-bourbon and sherry casks; numerous expressions are finished in different types of cask to enrich the aromatic profile.

Producer history Tomintoul

Tomintoul was founded in the mid-1960s; the distillery was built in 1964–1965 near the village of Tomintoul, in the heart of the Speyside/Cairngorms area. Initially most production went into blends; the first official single malt bottlings date from the 1970s. Ownership has changed several times over the years and the brand is now managed by Angus Dundee Distillers.

Production philosophy

Production focused on achieving balanced, soft and accessible whiskies, emphasizing the purity of the local water and maturation in different cask types to create expressions with distinctive finishes.
