Country:Francia
Founded:1936
Grapes:Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carménère, Côt (Malbec), Petit Verdot
The Médoc's northernmost communal appellation.
Wines known for their tannic structure and great longevity
Blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with significant use of Merlot.
Presence of classified Châteaux in the area.
Viticulture in the Saint-Estèphe area dates back to Roman times; significant development took place in the Middle Ages thanks to trade with England. The gradual drainage of marshland from the 17th century expanded the area available for cultivation. The region received official recognition as an AOC in 1936 and has since consolidated its oenological identity within the Médoc.
Production philosophy
Winemaking aims to showcase the terroir: gravelly soils with a relatively higher clay content provide structure and aging potential. The appellation's wines favor tannin extraction and aging, with blends often dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon but with significant use of Merlot to round out the younger wines.
Terroir and vineyards
Situated at the northernmost point of the Médoc’s communal appellations, Saint-Estèphe borders Pauillac and stretches along the left bank of the Gironde. The soils are typically gravelly, and the climate is moderated by the influence of the large estuary.
