Gravner – Winery in Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Discover the story and wines of Gravner.

A winery in Collio (Oslavia, Gorizia) renowned for winemaking in Georgian amphorae, extended macerations and amber wines produced with minimal intervention.
Region: Friuli-Venezia Giulia
Country: Italia
Founded: 1901
Grapes: Ribolla Gialla, Pignolo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon
Italian pioneer in winemaking using Georgian amphorae. Strong emphasis on extended macerations and prolonged maturation. Vineyards located in Lenzuolo Bianco, Oslavia. Production focused on Ribolla Gialla and local grape varieties. An approach focused on biodiversity and minimal intervention in the cellar.
Winery history
The family estate at Lenzuolo Bianco has been documented since the early 20th century. Under the direction of Joško Gravner, the estate progressively abandoned conventional techniques to experiment with buried Georgian amphorae and minimal-intervention practices. In the 2000s Gravner systematically introduced the use of large terracotta jars for fermentation and aging, producing some of the most notable vintages in the region.
Production philosophy
Pragmatic approach to biodiversity and respect for the soil, with a strong focus on non-intervention in the winery: spontaneous fermentations, extended skin macerations, reduced use of chemical interventions, and no or minimal fining/filtration. The stated objective is to express the personality of the grapes and the terroir through long maturation periods.
Terroir and vineyards
Collio Goriziano, in Oslavia near the border with Slovenia; vineyards on the Lenzuolo Bianco hills benefit from the mild Adriatic climate and the local viticultural tradition.
