Winery history
The property has a recorded history dating back to 1565. Winemaking began in the 19th century, with significant vineyard plantings in its early decades and the winery constructed in 1827. In 1989 the estate was acquired by Symington Family Estates, which incorporated it into its portfolio while preserving its historical identity and its production of Port and Douro DOC wines.
Production philosophy
It combines respect for the region’s traditions with targeted investments in winemaking and in the expression of the terroir. Since 2007 the estate has expanded its range with Douro DOC wines that showcase indigenous varieties and a pronounced expression of the terroir.
Terroir and vineyards
Located in the Douro Superior, about 120 km east of Porto and close to the border with Spain, the estate sits amid terraced vineyards characterized by a dry climate, pronounced diurnal temperature variation and mixed soils that profoundly influence the style of the wines and Ports produced.
