The Vernatsch Schiava Alto Adige DOC Gschleier Alte Reben from Girlan is born in the heart of Alto Adige, a land renowned for its unique terroir and altitudes that confer elegance to red wines. This wine is produced exclusively from Schiava grapes grown on old vines (alte reben), whose prolonged life cycle provides aromatic concentration and refined structure.

The winemaking process favors the preservation of freshness and the mineral character typical of the territory, accompanied by a delicate aging that enhances the tannic softness and fruity character. In the glass, it presents a bright cherry red color, while the nose releases scents of fresh red fruits, light floral notes, and spicy nuances.

On the palate, it is harmonious and agile, with a persistent and pleasant finish. It is ideal paired with cold cuts, white meats, and preparations from Tyrolean cuisine, enhancing the balance between tradition and lightness.

Winery history
Founded in 1923 by an initial group of growers who chose an ancient 16th-century farmhouse in Cornaiano, the winery has evolved into a cooperative bringing together about 200 families. The ancient underground cellars and historic buildings coexist with modern facilities: harvesting and winemaking are managed with care for each individual vineyard to highlight local specificities.
Production philosophy
The winery aims to showcase historic local varieties and to interpret international varieties in a way that reflects the local terroir. Sustainability is central: targeted agronomic practices, reduced use of mineral fertilizers, energy-saving measures and the introduction of lighter bottles to reduce emissions.
Terroir and vineyards
Vineyards are located mainly in the Oltradige and the Bassa Atesina, on morainic and porphyric soils. Some crus and sites mentioned include Gschleier, Plattenriegl, Montiggl and Mazon, known for their diversity of exposure and soil.
Awards and recognitions
The winery and individual wines have received national and international recognition: for example, the Trattmann Pinot Noir Riserva has been listed among wines awarded "3 Bicchieri" by Gambero Rosso for consecutive years; the Vigna Ganger Pinot Noir Riserva has received very high scores from Wine Advocate; the Gschleier Alte Reben Vernatsch has been highlighted by Decanter among notable wines.
