Le Mortelle – Winery in Toscana (Maremma)

Discover the story and wines of Le Mortelle.

Estate in the Tuscan Maremma owned by Marchesi Antinori, known for a partially underground cellar and wines that express the character of the coastal terroir.
Region: Toscana (Maremma)
Country: Italia
Founded: 1999
Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Vermentino, Ansonica, Viognier, Carménère
Estate owned by the Marchesi Antinori, part of the Tenute Antinori portfolio since 1999. A mostly underground winery designed to minimize its impact on the landscape and to operate by gravity. Vineyards planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with white varieties such as Vermentino and Ansonica. Production of labels linked to the Tuscan Maremma.
Winery history
The estate is mentioned in the historical records of the area and became part of Tenute Antinori following the acquisition and works begun in 1999. Since then, the family has worked on renewing the vineyards and constructing a modern, largely underground cellar designed to reduce landscape impact and to take advantage of gravity-flow winemaking.
Production philosophy
Enhance the terroir of the Maremma through targeted viticultural and technological choices: grape selection, gravity-flow winemaking without the use of pumps, and a winery integrated into the landscape that prioritizes energy efficiency and quality control.
Terroir and vineyards
The estate is located in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, a few kilometres from Castiglione della Pescaia, set within a landscape of Mediterranean scrub. The soils are medium-textured — sandy and silty — with a predominantly siliceous-clay composition and, in some areas, rich in rock fragments.
