The story
The brand's origins date back to the late 19th century, with the official brand history citing 1888 as the start of its story. The name and trademark moved through various corporate phases (including integration with larger groups such as Seagram) and in February 2002 Kirin Brewery Company acquired the brand and production facilities, bringing Four Roses back to the U.S. market. In February 2026 an agreement was announced for the sale of the brand and operations from Kirin to E. & J. Gallo Winery (transaction subject to regulatory closing).
Distillation
Two stages: continuous column for the first distillation followed by a 'doubler' (pot-shaped still) for a second, softer and purifying distillation.
Ageing
Aging in new charred American oak barrels, stored in single-story rack warehouses to ensure more uniform aging; declared minimum aging of five years for straight bourbon.
