Distillation and production

Production method

Milling and fermentation on two distinct mash bills (one with 60% corn, the other with 75% corn) combined with limestone-rich Salt River water; fermentation with five proprietary yeast strains; double distillation (continuous column still followed by a 'doubler'); storage and aging in new charred American oak barrels; selection and blending/bottling according to the product (single barrel or blend for the signature lines).

Distillation

Two stages: continuous column for the first distillation followed by a 'doubler' (pot-shaped still) for a second, softer and purifying distillation.

Ageing

Aging in new charred American oak barrels, stored in single-story rack warehouses to ensure more uniform aging; declared minimum aging of five years for straight bourbon.

Producer history Four Roses

The brand's origins date back to the late 19th century, with the official brand history citing 1888 as the start of its story. The name and trademark moved through various corporate phases (including integration with larger groups such as Seagram) and in February 2002 Kirin Brewery Company acquired the brand and production facilities, bringing Four Roses back to the U.S. market. In February 2026 an agreement was announced for the sale of the brand and operations from Kirin to E. & J. Gallo Winery (transaction subject to regulatory closing).

Production philosophy

Pursuit of consistency and controlled complexity: Four Roses works with multiple recipes (combining two mash bills and five proprietary yeast strains) to achieve distinctive yet reproducible aromatic profiles. Careful management of production stages and aging conditions is central to the bourbon's mellow character.

Territory

Lawrenceburg, Kentucky (distillery) with a bottling facility and warehouses connected to Cox's Creek, Nelson County - Kentucky, USA.
