Distillation and production

Production method

Distilled from wine with selected grapes; use of continuous distillation for some expressions (e.g. Classica). Products are obtained through aging in oak casks and subsequent finishing and blending of distillates of different ages (for some reserves up to 10–15 years).

Distillation

Wine distillation; use of continuous distillation processes for some expressions and the practice of blending distinct distillates (acquaviti) of different ages.

Ageing

Aging in oak casks of various sizes and types; assembly (blending) of distillates with different maturation times (some selections up to 10–15 years).

Producer history Vecchia Romagna

The origins lie in the activity of the Buton family: Jean Buton settled in Emilia‑Romagna in 1820 and in 1830 founded the first Italian steam distillery associated with the brand. In 1939 the product was relaunched under the name Vecchia Romagna with the recognizable image of Bacchus and the triangular bottle. In subsequent years production and aging were centralized in large facilities (the so-called "Città del Brandy") and in 1999 the brand was acquired by the Gruppo Montenegro. In 2020 the 200-year history of the Buton/Vecchia Romagna tradition was celebrated.

Production philosophy

To enhance the Italian identity of the brandy through grape selection, wine distillation and controlled aging in different types of casks, with attention to blending and the organoleptic quality of the reserves.

Territory

Bologna and the Emilia‑Romagna area (Italy). Historically linked to the cellars and aging facilities in the province of Bologna.
