Winery history Maison Klipfel

Founded by Martin Klipfel in 1824, Maison Klipfel underwent a long family-led development that featured Eugène and Louis Klipfel among its key figures. In 1830 the estate was enriched by the prestigious Clos Zisser; from 1921 the cellar was already producing wines classified as Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles from Clos Zisser and Kirchberg de Barr, long before official regulations. In the 20th century André Lorentz contributed to the house’s commercial and technical development; ownership and management remained tied to local families until recent times.

Production philosophy

The approach combines family tradition with a focus on the terroir: choices in the vineyard and in the cellar aim to express the minerality and typicity of the Grand Crus of Alsace. Production ranges from Alsace varietal wines to Crémant produced using the traditional method, with attention to practices that promote the longevity and character of the wines.

Terroir and vineyards

The winery is based in Barr, Alsace; it manages vineyards on Grand Cru sites such as the Kirchberg de Barr and also owns plots on the Kastelberg and the Wiebelsberg. Soils range from the marly-calcareous terrain of the Kirchberg to schist in the Kastelberg, conditions that impart structure and minerality to the wines.
