The term "pinot" seems to derive from "pine cone", and more specifically "small pine cone", meaning both the modest size of the bunch, and the characteristic of having dense, close grapes, just like the scales of a pine cone. Among all the red grape varieties in the world it is considered the most noble and elegant (the only possible comparison is probably that with Nebbiolo), and at the same time it is the most difficult to interpret.
