Winery history Bergsig Estate

The estate bears the Afrikaans name for "mountain view" and has belonged to the Lategan family for generations. The family's roots in the Winelands date back to 1735, and they established themselves at Bergsig in 1843. Over the years the property has preserved the family's winemaking tradition and developed hospitality and direct sales.

Production philosophy

The estate states an approach grounded in sustainability and responsibility toward future generations (recurring motto: «wine that doesn't cost the earth»). As an 'estate', all grapes are grown, vinified and bottled on site to express the estate's terroir.

Terroir and vineyards

Situated in the Breedekloof (part of the Breede River Valley), at the foot of the Drakenstein and Hex River mountains. Mediterranean climate and vineyards fed by mountain streams, with soils characterised by sedimentary deposits and weathered sandstone typical of the area.

Awards and recognitions

The winery lists numerous recent accolades (see the Accolades section), including medals and mentions in competitions such as the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards, district-level wins in the SA Terroir Awards for certain labels, mentions in guides like Platter’s, and IWSC classifications for selected wines.
