Distillation and production

Production method

For Port wines Niepoort uses traditional Douro methods (extended maceration, fermentation in granite lagares in some facilities, and aging in barrels and pipes in Vila Nova de Gaia). For the eaux-de-vie they use distillates from pomace/wine blended and aged in wood.

Distillation

The Aguardente Velhíssima is a pomace distillate (aguardente) produced as a blend: aged spirits (for example a blend of lots aged 25 and 10 years) finished in oak casks.

Ageing

Aging in wood for Ports (traditional barrels/pipes in Vila Nova de Gaia for tawny and colheita) and in oak barrels for the spirits; some Colheita labels indicate long aging periods in traditional pipes.

Producer history Niepoort

A family house founded in 1842, Niepoort consolidated its reputation as a producer of Port and Douro wines. In recent decades the family, including figures such as Dirk Niepoort, has expanded the business to include still Douro wines and acquired several quintas (including Quinta de Nápoles, Quinta do Carril and Vale de Mendiz). The historic cellars for aging Port are located in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Production philosophy

Combines respect for tradition with an innovative spirit: emphasis on terroir, attention to biodiversity and projects oriented toward sustainability (including biodynamic approaches and experimental movements such as Nat'Cool). Seeks a balance between historic methods and modern practices.

Territory

Douro region (particularly Pinhão/Cima Corgo), with historic cellars and aging sites in Vila Nova de Gaia. Presence and projects also in other Portuguese regions such as Vinho Verde, Dão, Bairrada and Alentejo.
